Want to start living a healthier life? It all starts with this one thing. Walking.

It’s a New Year. Did you over indulge just a little? I sure did, a lot actually!

Well, the holidays are over now. So, it’s time to start getting back into shape.

Or maybe it has nothing to even do with the holidays at all.

There are many reasons to start

Have you been letting yourself go for a while now? Think you don’t have enough time to exercise. You’ve put on a few pounds or you just don’t feel like yourself. Or maybe you just feel like it’s time for you to make a change and start living a healthier life. It doesn’t matter what the reason is. All that matters is that you’re ready to take that first step. Well you’re in the right place then. Let’s get to it. 

Why walking?

Walking is the easiest way to start exercising. It’s something you can do every single day. This is the perfect way to start because it’s low impact. You don’t need any special equipment. There are no excuses. You can start no matter what your fitness level is. Even watch TV and have fun while doing it.

Walk daily

Now, if you are not in the best of shape, start with a 10-minute walk. You want to try and do this every day.  At least start off with 3 to 5 times a week. Have a short walk around your neighborhood. You can start making it longer once you get used to it. Work your way up.

If you are already in pretty good shape, walking can still benefit you. You can get an effective workout from walking no matter what shape you’re in. There are small things you can do to up your game. Try walking a little farther. Speed it up and walk faster. Or you can even incorporate some hills or stairs.

Low impact

Let’s not get ahead of ourselves though. Chances are you haven’t exercised much lately. I think that’s the case with most of us. Walking is the easiest way to start exercising because it’s low impact. It’s gentle on your joints and heart. It actually has a moderate impact on your whole body. You can start with walking even if have doctor’s orders to exercise. But maybe you just want to lead a healthier life and don’t know where to start. Either way walking is the perfect first step for anyone.

No Equipment

This is one of the best parts. You don’t need any special equipment. The only thing you need is a comfortable pair of shoes. Throw them on, and get moving. Go for a stroll around your neighborhood. Get out and visit your local park. Most of them offer nice walking trails. Or you can even walk around your house or yard. You don’t even have to leave the house.  

No excuses

Don’t use weather for an excuse either. You can always head to the mall. Keep in mind that this option may cost you some money though. I mean if you step in the mall, you’ll probably end up shopping.  But, really your options are endless. There should not be any excuses to not start exercising.

Watching TV

You can even exercise while watching TV. Say What? Yes, a lot of people do. Simply walk in place in front of your TV. Here’s a little idea to get you up and moving more. Do this while sitting on the couch watching TV at night. During a commercial break get up and march in place until your show comes back on. Are you using Netflix? Then walk in place for 10 minutes between episodes. You can even challenge yourself and march in place during the entire show. You’ll see that time will fly by. All while having fun watching TV and moving at the same time.

Have fun

Now speaking of having fun, getting outside can be fun too. You can mix up your route and walk in different areas of town or your neighborhood. Try visiting different parks and hiking trails. Invite a friend or family member to go along with you. It’s a good time to catch up on some gossip. Plus, having a walking companion will help keep you accountable. And last but not least, grab your phone and go. You can always listen to an audio book or your favorite music while walking. This will help the time go by faster as well.

Give it a Try

The main thing is to just get up. Get out there and move around. It’s the easiest way to start exercising. Give it a try and see if you don’t start to feel better. After just a few short weeks of walking daily you’ll start to be healthier, happier, and stronger.
